SeaSwarm is an oil cleaning robot army, developed by MIT. It’s a fleet of autonomous, solar-powered robots which communicate with each other via Wi-Fi and GPS to collectively clean surface oil from a spill.

Each robot has a flexible conveyer belt made of a thin nanowire mesh which does the oil collection, by rolling softly over the ocean’s surface. The magic happens in the nanofabric (developed at MIT), which absorbs up to 20 times its weight in hydrophobic liquids, like oil (without picking up any water). Processing the material involves heating it to extract the oil, and then the nano fabric can be used over and over. This is done locally to avoid repeated trips back to shore, which would significantly slow collection time.

SeaSwarm estimates that a team of 5,000 of these robots operating continuously would be able to clean up an area the size of the Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil spill.

This is some awesome innovation!

The iPhone 4 Retina display really is something awesome. This shows the difference up close: iPhone 3Gs display on the left, iPhone 4 Retina display on the right. 326 pixels per inch - slightly more than the human retina can differentiate at about a foot away from the eye.  I can’t wait to see how this makes my photos look. Just one of a bunch of incredible features built into a device I can’t wait to get my hands on!

When it comes to training (working out) there are all kinds of excuses. Some use these to get out of a workout today, with the half-promise they’ll make up for it tomorrow.

Others see training sessions as opportunities. Paul Rowntree, a former elite Australian mountain biker, once described how he felt about his gruelling training sessions. He said something to the effect of ‘I can’t make up for the training sessions I miss. No matter how much I don’t feel like it, how sore I am, how crappy the weather is, I won’t get this session back. So I get out of bed and I go’. Then there are others like Matt Scott (the athlete in the video) who refuse to let anything - including disabilities - get in the way of his training.

When it comes to training, do you put off for tomorrow, what you could do today? Are you just making excuses?

Fear inspired by warriors: the Maori Haka is performed by the New Zealand national rugby team - the All Blacks - before every game, striking fear into the hearts of the opposition. It’s intense, even more so when the opposing team is challenging with their own dance - and all this before kick-off! Proud to have this in my blood.

Two other great videos of the All Blacks performing the haka are here and here, and some interesting background can be found here on Wikipedia.
